The Art of Jan Pysander Whitney

A while ago I met Jan because I was interviewed for my band on the RAW WAR fanzine. There has always been a good conversation between us. We can easily talk about design, music and everything that revolves around that. Some nights under the influence have contributed to the exchange of many opinions on so many things, including a lot of black metal music and more. Now is the time he answers my questions, but more than anything else this wants to be a continuation of the musical / satanic / pschedelic chatting that I admit I miss :)

When did you begin to draw and paint and what were the motivations that pushed you to embark on this artistic career?

I started as early as I could hold a pen so it was a long time ago, my motivations to draw and create in general has always
come from a natural impulsive/instinct, no thoughts or reasons needed in other words hehe.

Are you the creator of your own fanzine “Raw War”, have you created it to give space to your artwork or also to create something that is missing in the underground panorama?

Yes I am the one and only ruler of both the online & printed versions of RAW WAR, first
And foremost RAW WAR is a black/death metal zine focusing on the music but if I feel to push my artwork side I do so.
The only reason really for me to start doing zines is of egoistic reasons, as long as I have fun I keep doing it.
Also besides RAW WAR I have another printed only zine called The Cloven Hoof and the next third issue will be an only Mexico band issue! And it also will be released by the Mexican underground label Caligo Arcanum Productions, release date is TBA.

What are your sources of inspiration and eventually other artists who inspire you in your work at the moment?

Besides lifes general pain and sufferings there has always been many different artists that have come a long way in their respective fields that keep rebirthing my own urge to create and desecrate.
When young I devoured all I could that was drawn/illustrated like comics, cartoons(regular movies also like Conan, Evil Dead, Ninja Mission, Blue Velvet etc), artbooks, books on other countries mythologies,  computer games, role playing games as long as they was about something that was not part of our standard “grey reality”…. every chance I got to escape this world I took! As I was/is into so many aspects of “pop culture” it is hard to pin point any specific artists that would have inspire my on art style.

How much is important the environment in which you work and live? Do you have the tranquility necessary to create what you want all the time?

For me I think it is the other way around…I mean drawing is meditation for me more or less so
I guess it is one need that started  in  the early days  was to draw  to “zone-out” from the stress outside.(the more stress the more I drew) My life has never been directly calm so tranquility is an obscure word for me haha.
Either life makes you go crazy or you find ways to deal with it and I guess for me I  try  to take a step back to see objective on stuff rather then to be engulfed by them.

Obviously music is another component that inspires us and accompanies us artists in the evolution of our drawings or paintings, is it important for you to choose the right music to accompany you while working?

Yes! Very much so, in this aspect I have a very functional  morphed symbiosis with all my parts of interest/work that they goes hand in hand, for example I review stuff often to my zines so I sit in my cave  with new music plugged hard  in my ears as I paint/draw some cover artwork or similar.

When you do not have customer requests and specific directions on the subject and theme to depict, what do you like to illustrate? Abstract, figurative,  landscapes or  do you rely on improvising on your own ideas of the moment?

I have always drawn stuff like this so when I have no specific order to create I do similar things anyways haha!
But sure there is a more free element of improvising what I do when I am free sailor.
I started out in this field of doing black/death metal covers/t-shirts/posters etc with ink and pen but under the years I have gradually transcended towards acrylic paint and brushes…or some kind of mixed styles. Future goals is to start paint in oils.

What are your favorite media? Pencil, china, ink, acrylic paint brush or oil.....?

No favorite really but I am most used to ink and acrylics

What was the commission you received from a Band that you were most satisfied and proud of your work done?

Hard question….Hmm let see, I am proud for having my art on two Drowning the Lights releases but the art is not necessary what  I like the most… I am happy with God Disease Ep “Rebirth of Horror”, the Jarnvidr releases, Trepenator –Mutant Birth , the Kalmankantaja Ep -Metsänkulkija also a coming split with Kalmankantaja/Gratzug seems to turn out good. Some Carnal Tomb tapes I did looked cool I think and some of their  t-shirts. Well I probably missed some now  but I done too much to keep track on them all…I am not bragging its just a fact.

Do you think that the link between illustration and music in the Black Metal scene is more important today than what was in the past?

I think it will always be important to all the underground genres as creativity is something that keep it together and keep the fire alive, I mean the interlaced connections with all people that do their stuff, the painter/illustrator and the musicians and the rest around is in the same boat….but just talking about Black metal yes perhaps there is more drawn and painted covers nowadays then the 90´s.

What is your relationship with occult themes? Do you think it is important to channel certain energies through drawing?

I have natural interest and instinct that draws me towards all kind of occult stuff but I have never chosen one “true” way for me… I guess just pick one path has not been important to myself or to realize myself. I have though a hope to at some point in my life have time to delve deeper into some occult practice. One quick way I understand if you like a short cut to your inner cosmos is DMT.

Do you have an opinion about creating art and music under altered states?

Yes, first I like to say that everybody has their own preferred states when they shall create,
and I can create well under a couple of altered states  as well as in my natural one….and that is
the state that I create in for most of the time (alcohol is a big no no for me though) It is easy to
start a rambling here haha  as there are so many unintelligent and childish views on these topics.
There is always two sides of everything, both bad and  good.

I know you are also putting your creativity efforts on a black metal musical projects, can you tell us more about it and what can be expected from that?

Yes that is correct, it is a two-member black metal project called ILLVILJA and we are working on our debut Ep, a label is already interested in releasing this which feels very inspiring. I cant say so much more but when it is due time it will surface in its full ugly glory.

Final words and feel free to say whatever think has been unsaid so far ;)

Thanks first for your interest in my activities! And I hope I have not been too fuzzy
and unclear in my answers haha, I am not so used with being on this side of  an interview.
